Orion P-3 Aircraft Photos
These are images that I've
collected from around the Internet in addition to some that I've scanned in
myself from originals. I will make every effort to give credit where due.
Canada's CP-140 Aurora
The CP-140 Aurora looks virtually identical to the Lockheed P-3C Orion externally, but
internally is quite different, using computer systems that were first installed in
yet another Lockheed anti-submarine warfare aircraft, the carrier-based S-3A Viking.

- Flying over a little island. Cpl Doug Desrochers
of 19 Wing Comox Imaging Section took this shot of a West-coast based CP-140
Aurora flies near Desolation Sound and the Strait of Georgia.

- With its four big GE- T-56 turboprop engines, the
aurora will do 405
knots and has a range of up to 5000 miles. With these features, the
aircraft can cover a lot of territory in a single flight which can last
up to 14 hours. DND photo

- This Aurora is flying over
Vancouver harbor. The
bridge is the Lions Gate linking the North Shore with the city of
Vancouver via Stanley Park. The Point Atkinson light house is just
visible, as is the Stanley Park Teahouse. (Details courtesy of
Stephen Priestly)
In its low visibility paint scheme, an aurora returns from
patrol. The aurora color often changes because of the way its
camouflage reflects the available light, making the aircraft look
different from day to day. Dnd photo.

- As well as helping the Department of Fisheries and Oceans enforce
national and international fishing regulations,
Aurora crews routinely
work with the RCMP in counter-drug efforts, report marine pollution
violations, patrolling the far North, performing Search and Rescue(SAR)
missions, and training for their primary Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW)
mission.

fly out of 14 wing Greenwood, Nova Scotia
with 404, 405, and 415 squadrons, rotating among them as required.
This 107 carries a commemorative paint scheme for the annual
anti-submarine warfare competition, "Fincastle". The scheme
consisted of a set of shark's teeth and eyes on both sides of each
engine. DND photo.

(Comox) on a training mission. Canada's fleet of 18 Auroras has become
a force in asserting Canada's sovereignty over the three oceans which
surround it. DND Photo.

- The Arcturus aircraft were
procured to augment the CP-140 Aurora fleet
in supporting DND and other government departments in roles including:
marine surface surveillance, Search and Rescue, drug interdiction, and
pilot training. In essence the Arcturus will be assigned all the roles
of the Aurora, except that of anti-submarine warfare (ASW).

- An Aurora
Maritime Patrol Aircraft from 19 Wing Comox overflies a
coastal freighter as it transits through British Columbia's Strait of
Georgia. The vessel is similar in type to that of High Seas Driftnet
violators the migrant smuggling vessels Aurora crews detect on a regular
basis. (found January 25, 2002, at

importation of illegal narcotics at sea. Similarly, Auroras fly more than 1000 hours
annually with DFO officials in patrolling Canada's highly coveted fishing grounds.

patrolling of the waters off Canada's coasts has enabled Aurora crews
to become very adept at recognizing the routine and unusual pattern of maritime activity.
