- Misawa, Japan, Jan. 22, 2002. An
Aviation Ordnanceman assigned to
Patrol Squadron Four Zero (VP-40) loads sonobuoys into a P-3C
Orion aircraft. Sonobuoys are used to detect and locate submarines.
They are directional frequency and ranging sensors that "listen" for
targets and transmit the acoustic data back to the aircraft.
Acoustic operators monitor the data with headsets and on a
multi-purpose display, then pass the information to the tactical
coordinator (TACCO), who decides where and when to launch the
next sonobuoy. Sonobuoys used in training are recoverable.
